Shift+2 is always my execute ability if I have one. For example, for me, clicking the mouse wheel is always my interrupt. Put abilities you use often (the staples of your rotation) on the hotkeys you find easiest to hit, and put abilities you use a little less often (like adrenals or offensive/defensive cooldowns) on hotkeys for which you have to move your fingers slightly farther.Ĥ) Use similar keybinding configurations for all your characters as much as possible. For example, you might put resource-generating abilities close together (or on the same keys but with shift/ctrl modifiers) and do the same with resource-consuming abilities. Experiment and be willing to change abilities and bindings around until they feel right.ģ) Group related or similar abilities together in ways that feel logical to you. None of these approaches is superior in absolute terms the better choice is the one that feels more natural to you. Different people use a different range of numbers, letters, and extra mouse buttons (contingent on your hardware, obviously). Other people prefer a larger number of basic keybinds but don't like using shift/ctrl modifiers. For example, I personally use a relatively small number of keys, extra mouse buttons, and my mouse wheel, then modify each with the shift or ctrl keys. For healing, practice on a DPS-mode companion (and yourself) while questing.Ģ) Play around with different keybinding setups until you find one you like. Practice solo until you're relatively comfortable before doing group content. You will find that it feels weird at first, you will forget or use the wrong ability sometimes, and it will seem annoying and as though you're moving backwards until you adjust to the change. Dailies/heroic quests are great for this. You'll notice a smaller difference in a target dummy type scenario but a much larger difference in movement- or mechanics-intensive encounters and at every level of PvP.Ī few tips as you begin learning to keybind:ġ) Allow yourself time to practice. Once you adjust to keybindings, you'll need to glance at your hotbars less often, mostly to check cooldown timers or to notice procs. Keybindings, once you commit them to muscle memory (which will take a little while, admittedly), allow you to focus on what's happening around you and to input your actions while using your mouse movement for turning, camera control, or retargeting (sometimes - usually tab is still better for this). It's obvious if you think about the reasons: clicking commits your mouse cursor to being positioned over your hotbars, it adds an extra step (moving the mouse) before every action, and it requires you to at least partially direct your attention to your hotbars rather than to the action around you. It's certainly possible to complete a lot of content as a clicker, but there's no real question that keybindings are better and more efficient once you get used to them. My right hand can also jump off the arrows to help hit ability buttons. It works really fluidly for me and I rarely have to take my eyes off the screen and my reaction time is way quicker than it would be otherwise. On the right side of the screen I have stuff I very rarely use, some emotes, extra mounts, PvP stuff like grenades. On the right side of my screen, vertically, I have some other lesser used abilities like group buff and other stuff that is really situational. The top bar is keybound to the number row, the one beneath it is shift+number. I have my primary abilities grouped into 2 bars at the bottom of my screen one on top of the other, the healing abilities on the left, the more DPSy ones on the right. I play on a laptop so I use the arrow keys with my right hand to move. It doesn't really take any time or effort. I play a sage healer and mostly do PvP and Ops and I literally can't comprehend how people effectively play these modes without keybinding. Is SWTOR worth trying?
